This episode is a permission slip for high-achieving, spiritually-conscious women who are tired of chasing “normal.” Because let’s be honest—what even is normal?

Amen unpacks how trauma hides in plain sight: in perfectionism, overgiving, people-pleasing, and the constant push to prove you're enough. Speaker 1:

You don't have to survive a war to carry trauma. You just have to live in a world that has taught you to keep abandoning yourself so that we can belong. That's everyday life, everyday living. Trauma is actually everywhere. It's because it's been normalized, woven into the fabric of life so seamlessly that we don't even question it. We meet people all the time who explode at the smallest things, people who shut down completely, might procrastinate, people who are constantly people-ple, overgiving People with immense potential who stay in the shadows, undervalued, overworked, never stepping into their light. But let's be honest is there a single family out there without someone struggling, a loved one maybe battling with addiction or anxiety that everybody's trying to keep secret? Or a parent whose pain is being passed down without words but through silence? Or the one that sacrifices their own needs to keep the peace, to keep giving? I often ask my son how was your day? He's coming up to teenage, and when he says normal, I just laugh. Because what is normal? In all the generations of my family, none of us lived a normal life and, honestly, I've yet to meet anyone who has. If you're normal and you come from a normal family, is there any chance you can invite me over for Christmas dinner because I've never seen one or been to one. And yet so many of us are still chasing this illusion of normal that's been created, wondering why we feel so off, so heavy, so stuck, so disappointed and so disillusioned. Because we're not this normal. That doesn't exist. That doesn't exist.

Speaker 1:

Hi, my name's Amon Kaur and I'm a trauma-informed therapist, a scientist and a former senior executive. But, titles aside, I'm a woman who once looked successful on the outside while silently unraveling on the inside After a traumatic relationship. I couldn't move forward. I was stuck. I didn't know who I was. I was a shell of me and I couldn't access or be able to produce the results I knew I was capable of or the life that I knew I was able to create, and I really needed to understand why. What was going on and that's when I began studying trauma and what I discovered absolutely changed everything.

Speaker 1:

Trauma isn't about what's broken in you. It's about what your body had to do to survive. But here's the thing not every therapist, coach, mentor, friend, family understands trauma, and if you've ever gone to the wrong person, you'll know how damaging that can be, because you don't feel heard, you don't feel understood. Maybe it was a friend that just said stop thinking about it or just leave them or just get over it. Or that boss that told you you're too sensitive or you're not good enough. Or that parent that dismissed your pain completely. That doesn't make you broken. That doesn't make you broken. What it does make, though, is maybe you've not processed the pain.

Speaker 1:

Let's go back and really understand where trauma was first studied. Veterans returning from war and maybe you're aware of this they're strong, capable people, trained for the unimaginable. I would not be able to do what they do. Yet they returned as shadows of who they once were. They couldn't connect with people around them, they couldn't connect and stay present with their families, and they'd lost, like, this sense of presence about them. They'd either explode over the smallest things or they would shut down completely, as if someone had lit a match inside their chest. Their bodies were still reliving the terror, the fear, even though the war was over. The sensations, the images, the fear it was all still there, looping on repeat. That's how PTSD was defined.

Speaker 1:

But the truth is, trauma doesn't require a battlefield, because it's not the event itself that defines trauma, because it's not the event itself that defines trauma. It's whether you had the ability or the capacity or the space to process it at the time it happened. Think of a child who went through something painful but never told anyone. They were alone. Or worse, told someone and then that made it even worse and that child carried the wounds for years and now, as an adult, they're still reacting as if the danger never ended.

Speaker 1:

Maybe people pleasing or overgiving to try and stay safe. That's trauma. It shows up as perfectionism, as procrastination, anxiety, disassociation, people pleasing, as that constant voice that says you're not good enough, you're too much, don't look too needy, don't ask for too much, don't need anything. Show people you're strong, you're too late. People will see you're not a good person. And we start to believe this is just who I am, that anxiety that's there, that fear all the time. But. But the truth is it's not. It's your body stuck in the past. It's doing its best to protect you, but that's all it is. It's stuck.

Speaker 1:

So how do we heal? How do we help people feel safe in their own body? Again? It starts with compassion, not the kind that says let me fix you, but the kind that says I see you, I hear you, I understand why you feel this way and it makes complete sense. Healing happens when we are seen, heard and understood, when there's love worth compassion, when someone is willing to listen without judgment and that might be you willing to see, hear and listen to your own pain, when you allow your body to feel safely what was once unsafe to feel, when you learn to say this is what happened to me and not feel the shame as if it should not have happened and it's a reflection on you, your, your reactions are not flaws, your feelings are not weaknesses. It's pain waiting for permission to be released.

Speaker 1:

Think of it like a computer. When too many programs are running in the background, it can crash, it slows down, it freezes. Or even your phone if you have too many tabs open, it uses up so much energy it drains you. That's what's unprocessed trauma it is, is exactly the same. It's like things that are left undone. They're open and draining you. So when you get a time to pause and process what's been left open or what's waiting, you reboot. You come back alive again. You have more energy, you feel more alive, you feel more motivated, you feel more like you.

Speaker 1:

Most of us are survivors of something, and that doesn't mean there's something wrong with us. It just means that we're living life and there might be something that still is waiting to be processed. It means you're worthy of peace. It means you're safe to be seen. It means that you don't have to carry this alone anymore. You don't need to leave things undone anymore in terms of your emotions. You love yourself enough to live in the present and you give yourself the time to let go of what no longer serves you anymore.

Speaker 1:

If you feel stuck, overwhelmed or like you were meant for more, but you just can't access it, there's nothing wrong with you. You just need the space to process what you've carried for so long maybe too long and when you do, you'll rediscover your energy, your voice, your belief in yourself and you'll lead your life from your body, your truth and your frequency. And if you're ready to release what's holding you back, I'd love to help you. Just book in a session with me, a one-to-one session with me. You can do that. I don't know how long I'm going to be doing these free one-to-one session with me. You can do that. It's I don't know how long I'm going to be doing these free one-to-ones.
